The Cherry Orchard to transfer to the Rose Theatre Kingston
Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory (SATTF) and the Rose Theatre Kingston are delighted to announce the transfer to the Rose of SATTF’s production of, The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekhov translated by Stephen Mulrine. The production will play at the Rose for one week from, Tuesday 15 - Saturday 19 May after its forthcoming Bristol Season, 29 March to 5 May.
"I'm delighted to have Bristol's Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory finally coming to Kingston. Chekhov's final tragi-comic masterpiece is a classic nobody should miss."
Stephen Unwin, Artistic Director of the Rose Theatre
“We are thrilled to be bringing The Cherry Orchard to the Rose, and hope that it will be the first of a long partnership.”
Andrew Hilton, Artistic Director, Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory
The Cherry Orchard will be SATTF’s third Chekhov production after its widely admired Three Sisters in 2005 and Bristol Old Vic co-production of Uncle Vanya in 2009.
The charming but feckless Madame Ranevskaya returns home to Russia after five years in Paris with her lover to face looming bankruptcy. Can she conceive of her magnificent cherry orchard being sold to save her whole estate, or will she ignore all advice and court disaster for herself and her family? Often hilarious, always engrossing, and above all true, Chekhov remains incomparable; a perfect partner for Shakespeare.
Julia Hills plays Ranevskaya and Simon Armstrong Lopakhin.
“A marvellous blend of heartache and hilarity … This truly is the most wonderful production”
The Times on SATTF/BOV co-production of Uncle Vanya
On the Evils of Tobacco
On the Wednesday and Friday evenings there will be post-show performances of Chekhov’s witty monologue, On The Evils of Tobacco. Paul Brendan performs a new translation by Stephen Mulrine.
